SPACE.com -- IBM's BlueBoard Technology on the Red Planet: "Technology used to plan the next Mars mission is catching up with the technology of the spacecraft themselves. Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory plan to use a giant plasma-screen electronic 'whiteboard,' based on IBM technology, to evaluate data captured by the 2003 Mars Exploration Rovers (MERs) once they have arrived on the Red Planet.
Inspired by IBM's BlueBoard technology, the screens are referred to as MERBoards (Mars Exploration Rover Boards), says Jay Trimble, head of the MERBoard design team."

Personal Tech Pipeline New Gadget Blocks Digital Video Recording: "Scientists at Georgia Tech have developed a device that could block digital recording in movie theaters and elsewhere.
The prototype, announced this week, shows promise for stopping piracy and espionage. It can locate digital cameras' image sensors, which reflect light directly back to its source rather than scattering it. It sends a thin beam of white light back to the camera, blinding the camera and destroying the recording.
The device does not work with traditional cameras, which lack the telltale sensors, or the SLR cameras.
Associate Professor Gregory Abowd of the Georgia Tech College of Computing and members of his research team are trying to refine the system so it can discriminate between cameras and other objects. The system currently uses cameras and computer software to search for reflected light. Eventually, it could rely on lasers and transistors instead.
In addition to preventing film piracy, which the Motion Picture Association of America claims cost $6.1 billion in 2005, the devices could block recordings of government buildings or corporate assets. "

The new, $299 Wireless-G WVC200 PTZ Internet Camera with Audio, launched by Linksys May 31, is an appealing, nicely appointed wireless security camera that can be used and controlled from the Web.
The design of the camera is different from -- and in many respects, better than -- most other low-cost cameras on the market. The actual camera is enclosed in a hard, clear astronaut-helmet plastic bubble that protects the lens and electronics from damage and dust. Along the front panel are the LED lights and a LCD display that shows the camera's IP address. These two features -- the bubble and the iP address -- are the camera's most conspicuous and distinctive features. The camera is flat on the back with holes that make it easy to mount on a wall. A removable stand lets you place it on a shelf. A built-in Web server means you don't need to connect it to a PC or server, although you'll need one for setup. Up to 10 users can access the camera at once. "

One group called Solar Engineering Systems has already demonstrated a solar-powered cell phone that never needs to be charged and never needs to be turned off -- assuming you can get it into sunlight for a few hours per day.
The details on solar powered cell phone technology are sketchy, and real products are at least a few years away. But this is an area of research that will result in gadgets that are better for the environment, more convenient, better in emergencies (such as when someone gets lost while hiking) and will reduce the AC adaptor clutter that plagues our homes and offices.
