Startup Beams Wireless Power to Charge Devices
CORDLESS CHARGING THE FUTURE FOR SMALL ELECTRONICS
Three firms are offering complementary wireless charging systems for small
electronics like cell phones, computer mice and wireless keyboards, some of
which will be ready to roll out on a large scale in 2008. The different
systems include chips on the transceiver and receiver side that transmit
radio frequency energy with 50 to 70 percent efficiency; charging pads that
transfer power via direct induction; and so-called intelligent induction
with embedded circuitry in the charger that communicates with receiving
coils in the portable device to charge it appropriately. Experts say that
wireless chargers will not be competing with induction devices, but would
likely be used in conjunction with them.
