3D tech will search for just the right photo | Tech News on ZDNet: "The Swedish company essentially takes a two-dimensional photograph and extrapolates it into a 3D model. A computer then takes the 3D model and searches for photo matches on the Internet and in public photo sites like Flickr.
The company announced early Tuesday that it will start conducting field tests with select users in January and then launch a public beta later in the first quarter.
The 3D model, although virtual, allows a computer to filter out differences related to the lighting, the camera angle, and the angle of the subject's face in two or more photos. Such differences can otherwise throw off search results. By filtering out differences, the search results are more accurate, according to Jan Eric Solem, founder and CTO. Even if one photograph is a direct head shot, Polar Rose's search engine can turn up three-quarter and profile shots."

However, due to the limitation of mobile devices, there is a need to develop new technologies to facilitate the browsing of large pictures on the small screen. This novel approach automates the scrolling and navigation of a large picture with a minimal amount of user interaction on mobile devices. An image attention model is employed to illustrate the information structure within an image. An optimal image browsing path is then calculated based on the image attention model to simulate the human browsing behaviors. Experimental evaluations of the proposed mechanism indicate that our approach is an effective way for viewing large images on small displays."

GUI Gets a Makeover: "September 25, 2006 (Computerworld) -- The graphical user interface — keyboard, mouse, windowing system — has dominated personal computing for the past 20 years. GUIs today represent the culmination of innovative work at organizations ranging from Xerox PARC in the ’70s to Apple Computer Inc. in the ’80s. But it was Microsoft Corp. that popularized it for mainstream business computing in the ’90s. Today, Windows and the Office productivity suite have become the GUI standard-bearers for the business desktop.
With major revisions of both products ready to roll out, the enterprise desktop GUI is getting its first significant face-lift in years. Most of those changes, such as the Aero 3-D features in Windows Vista, are small steps forward. Others, such as Office 2007’s ribbon bar, represent a bigger leap — both for the GUI and for end users.
More changes lie ahead. The GUI will get better at simplifying user options by filtering them down based on social or operational contexts — or where a mobile computing device is being used, researchers say. Tomorrow’s GUIs will adapt to bigger screens and multiple displays by rearranging the desktop and relegating different content to primary and secondary displays. Larger display acreage could also push gesture-based input devices such as touch screens, digitizing pads and the stylus into the mainstream. "
