Eventually, Intel said, it expects to put tens to hundreds of computing cores inside a single processor where each chip will be capable of dynamically assigning individual or clusters of processing cores along with the necessary memory and bandwidth to specific tasks, using virtualization software to put protective walls around each task's dedicated slice of computing resources."
Steve's Commentary
Autonomic computing is described here as user-aware and self-aware computing. That is, devices that can make decisions based on an awareness of the users needs and its own state. Intel anticipates that this sort of "intelligence" will be powered by multi-core processors. It is a long way off, but will be an exciting technology to monitor.
An interesting point about this article is that it validates some of my speculation in my post from Wednesday, May 04, 2005. I was commenting on the power of virtualization technology and its potential for the future. It appears that Intel sees this potential and has plans to use it.
